What is Shiatsu Massage?
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese bodywork technique that applies rhythmic finger and palm pressure along the body's meridians (energy pathways) to encourage the natural flow of Qi (life energy) — the framework of NCCIH-described traditional Chinese medicine that Eastern bodywork draws on. Performed fully clothed under a blanket without oil or lotion, a Shiatsu session is intended to ease muscle tension and help you relax. Recognized by the NCCIH as one of the Eastern-derived styles of massage therapy, Shiatsu focuses on sustained pressure at specific meridian points rather than the long, oiled strokes of Swedish massage — an approach many people find comforting for everyday neck, shoulder, and lower-back tension from desk work, poor posture, or chronic stress. First-time clients often choose Shiatsu because there is no awkward draping situation: you stay dressed in loose, comfortable clothing for the entire session. At Healing Shiatsu in San Francisco's Outer Richmond District, sessions run 30 to 120 minutes, with prices starting at $65.
About Shiatsu
How Does Shiatsu Work?
In the tradition it grows from, Shiatsu is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine, where well-being is thought to depend on the natural flow of energy, or Qi, through the body. Shiatsu therapists use finger and palm pressure along energetic pathways, called meridians, to encourage the flow of Qi.
In modern terms, shiatsu is a form of hands-on massage that aims to settle the body's “fight-or-flight” stress response and invite a calmer, more relaxed state, which many people experience as eased tension and a sense of release.
When doing the shiatsu massage, you are under a blanket and no oil/lotion will be used but after the massage if you want lotion, we can do that too (our lotion is natural). Shiatsu massage is designed for stress relief — helping you unwind and relax the neck, shoulders and back muscles.
Evidence & Research
We describe Qi and meridians as the traditional ideas Shiatsu was built on, not as medical claims. On what current research actually shows: the NCCIH explains that the stress response raises heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure, while the body's relaxation response does the opposite. Reviews of massage research suggest it may offer short-term relief for neck, shoulder, and low-back tension, though the NCCIH notes the strength of that evidence is generally low. The AMTA holds that massage therapy can support physical and mental well-being and have a positive influence on stress. Shiatsu is not a cure for any disease, and it is not a substitute for medical care.
The Experience
What Does Shiatsu Feel Like?
The shiatsu therapist applies pressure using his or her fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous rhythmic sequence.
The pressure feels more localized, because unlike other types of massage, the finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm. Certain pressure points may feel tender, which some people describe it as "good pain."
If you feel any discomfort or pain during the treatment, tell your therapist and he or she will adjust the pressure so that it is comfortable to you.

What Our San Francisco Clients Say
My shoulders were killing me from work. Came in on a whim and the shiatsu session totally loosened everything up. No oil, no fuss — just solid pressure work. Been back three times now.
Tried the cupping combo after a friend wouldn't stop talking about it. She was right. Left feeling lighter than I have in months. The lady working on me adjusted everything without me even asking.
Walked past this place for a year before finally going in. Wish I hadn't waited. The 90-minute session put me to sleep halfway through. Fair prices, no upselling, just a really good massage.
